Best Roof Shingles for Texas Heat and Hail (2026): An Installer's Ranking

October 20, 2026 | Mahmoud Abu Saad

Key takeaways

  • For most Dallas-Fort Worth homes the best shingle is a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated architectural shingle (CertainTeed Landmark IR or NorthGate): $5.50 to $6.50 per square foot installed, 20 to 25 years in DFW.
  • Staying 20 years or more? Standing seam metal at $12 to $22 per square foot lasts 40 plus years and beats every shingle on heat and hail.
  • CertainTeed Landmark Pro is heavier than Landmark (about 300 lbs per square against 240), but neither one is Class 4, so neither earns the windstorm discount.
  • We no longer recommend 3-tab on occupied DFW homes: 12 to 15 years, 60 to 70 mph wind rating, no impact option.
  • Texas logged 902 hail events in 2025, the most of any state, and DFW averages 20.2 days at or above 100 degrees. Pick the rating and the attic ventilation first, the color second.

The best shingle for Texas heat and hail is a Class 4 impact-rated architectural shingle, which is what we put on most Plano, Frisco and Dallas homes. If you plan to stay 20 years or more, standing seam metal is the better long-term buy. Never 3-tab. Here is the full ranking, from the crews that install all of it.

the ranking, from the crews that install all of it.

Every product below is judged on four things, in order: UL 2218 impact class, wind rating as installed (six nails, sealed starter), how long it lasts under a DFW sun, and installed cost per square foot of roof. Looks come last. I’m Mahmoud Abu Saad, co-owner of Roof Raiders & Co. in Plano. Our crews have installed everything on this list across 42 DFW cities since 2022, and we hold CertainTeed’s ShingleMaster credential, which fewer than 3 percent of US roofers do. That is what lets us register the SureStart Plus warranties a non-credentialed installer cannot.

The test conditions are not mild. National Weather Service Fort Worth puts the DFW normal at 20.2 days a year at or above 100 degrees, with July and August highs averaging 95.6 and 95.8, and a record of 113 set in June 1980. Then the hail. The Insurance Information Institute counts 902 hail events in Texas in 2025, more than any other state, out of 5,432 nationwide. State Farm alone paid more than $5.6 billion in hail claims that year, with Texas leading the nation at $1.4 billion.

Landmark Pro and Presidential price in the designer bracket because the bundles are heavier, the install is slower, and both pair with a thicker ridge cap. Every lifespan is a DFW number; our roof lifespan guide explains why Texas takes five to ten years off the national chart.

Why Class 4 is number one. The June 17 2024 storm ran from west Frisco through north Plano into Allen with 1.75 to 2.5 inch hail, and our crews worked 47 roofs in that corridor. Class 3 architectural roofs eight years or older: 38 of 41 totaled. Class 4 roofs, any brand, any age: 0 of 11. Same storm, same streets. The payback math is in our Class 4 shingles guide.

Why metal is number two. Price. At $12 to $22 per square foot a standing seam roof costs two to three times the Class 4 shingle roof, and in our experience the owner-occupant breakeven lands around year 12 to 14. Past that, metal wins outright: Class 4 rated, 140 mph rated, and in the eight Plano and Frisco attics where we ran temperature loggers in July 2025, the metal attics ran 50 to 80 degrees cooler. The full comparison is in metal vs shingle in Dallas heat, and our standing seam page covers gauge and seam type.

why we stopped recommending 3-tab in dfw.

Three-tab is a single flat layer of asphalt with a cut-out pattern. It is the cheapest shingle on the truck and the most expensive roof per year you can put on a North Texas home.

The numbers: 12 to 15 years in DFW, a 60 to 70 mph wind rating, no Class 4 option in the mainstream lines. Architectural runs $3.50 to $5.50 per square foot installed and lasts 18 to 22 years. Do the division. The 3-tab roof costs more per year of service and gets replaced in the middle of a hail cycle instead of at the end of one.

Heat finishes the job. IBHS testing found seal strength to be the most important factor in how a self-sealing asphalt shingle performs in high wind. A 3-tab has one thin tab on one seal strip, and 20 days a year above 100 degrees cook that strip until it lets go. The result is the zippered courses and creased tabs our wind damage guide shows on 1970s ranches in Garland and Mesquite.

We still install it on request for a detached garage or a rental about to sell. On a home you live in, we quote architectural and show you the per-year math. The side by side is in 3-tab vs architectural shingles in Texas.

A 3-tab roof in Plano is a 12-year roof with a 25-year warranty printed on the wrapper.

landmark vs landmark pro, the question we get most.

Short answer: Landmark on an insurance scope, Landmark Pro when you are paying out of pocket and staying 10 years or more. They look nearly identical from the curb in Plano or Frisco. Underneath, they are different products.

CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark Pro asphalt shingle sample boards side by side on a driveway during a bid walk Landmark and Landmark Pro sample boards on a driveway, which is the only honest way to compare the shadow line.

Both are CertainTeed’s architectural line, both carry a Class A fire rating, both use the NailTrak strip. The differences live in weight, warranty and wind.

The 60 pounds per square is the headline. On a 30 square Frisco roof that is 1,800 extra pounds of asphalt and granules between your decking and the next storm. Pro bundles run about 75 to 80 pounds against 60 to 65 for Landmark, which is part of why Pro costs more to install.

In hail, the weight shows. We tracked Landmark Pro roofs that came through May 28 2023 (Plano, Allen and Wylie, 1.5 to 2.25 inch hail) with cosmetic bruising only, then re-inspected them after June 17 2024. About 40 percent still passed. On standard Landmark, 2 inch and larger hail almost always produced functional damage an adjuster scoped.

A thicker shingle is not an impact-rated shingle. Landmark Pro is heavier than Landmark. Neither one is Class 4.

That is the correction we make most on first calls. Pro earns no UL 2218 rating and no windstorm discount. For the rating you move to Landmark IR or NorthGate, an upgrade of $65 to $110 per square over base Landmark.

Three install details your bidder should volunteer:

  • Six nails per shingle with matching CertainTeed starter, or the 130 mph wind warranty does not apply. Most shops still shoot four.
  • Pro pairs with Swiftstart starter and Mountain Ridge cap. Standard ridge on a Pro roof costs you the warranty extension.
  • The 15-year StreakFighter matters east of I-35 in Garland, Mesquite and east Richardson, where humidity streaks north-facing slopes by year eight. In Frisco and Prosper it is mostly noise.

Pick Landmark if the carrier approved the architectural line item, the home is a rental or a flip, or you are selling inside five years. Pick Pro for a forever home in Plano West or a custom Prosper build where the deeper shadow line pays back at resale. On a hail claim, take the Landmark scope, pay your deductible, and write the Pro upgrade as a homeowner-pay line item. We document the damage and meet your adjuster on the roof. The upgrade decision stays yours.

class 4 and the windstorm premium discount.

Class 4 comes from UL 2218, a test that drops a 2 inch steel ball from 20 feet onto the shingle. Pass means no crack on the back of the mat. Face dents are allowed, which is why a Class 4 roof can look bruised after a storm and still be watertight.

Manufacturers get there two ways. SBS-modified asphalt (Malarkey Vista AR, IKO Nordic) rubberizes the shingle so it flexes under the strike. Reinforced mats (CertainTeed Landmark IR, NorthGate) back it with a scrim or fiberglass layer. Both pass. Both earn the discount. Landmark IR is our pick when the 5-Star SureStart Plus registration matters.

Side-by-side test cuts of a Class 3 asphalt shingle with mat fractures next to a Class 4 impact shingle showing only granule loss after a North Texas hailstorm Test cuts after a hailstorm: a Class 3 shingle with mat fractures beside a Class 4 shingle showing granule loss only.

Many Texas carriers discount the windstorm portion of the premium for a UL 2218 Class 4 roof. The percentage varies by company, and it applies to the windstorm portion, not the whole policy. Three things homeowners in Frisco and McKinney miss every spring:

  1. You have to send the carrier the manufacturer certificate. We send it on every Class 4 job, and about 40 percent of the homeowners we talk to did not know it existed.
  2. The discount usually does not stack with a roof-age discount. New roof plus Class 4 is one discount, not two.
  3. The manufacturer warranty does not cover hail. Hail is an insurance claim, every time. What Class 4 buys you is a roof that survives the hit, so there is no claim and no deductible that year.

Cost: $5.50 to $6.50 per square foot of roof installed. A 2,400 sq ft Plano home runs about $22,000 in Landmark Pro and about $24,500 in the Class 4 version, and in our experience the carrier discount recovers that difference inside four to seven years. Ask your agent for the exact line-item discount before you sign. If a storm lands first, our hail damage repair page covers what we photograph for the adjuster.

color and attic temperature: pick the rating first.

Every asphalt shingle in DFW ages from two directions: hail from above and heat from below. The attic is the part most bids ignore. In the eight Plano and Frisco attics we logged in July 2025, the shingle attics peaked at 138 to 152 degrees at the underside of the deck. Asphalt over that attic loses flexibility, the sealant dries, and a roof rated for 110 mph is lifting at 50 by year eight to twelve.

Ventilation first. Balanced ridge-and-soffit ventilation pulls that heat out all day. Ridge vent runs $8 to $18 per linear foot on a replacement and is the cheapest lifespan extension on the proposal. Box vents without soffit intake do almost nothing. Our ridge vent vs box vent comparison has the thermal images.

Color second. A lighter surface reflects more sun. The EPA lists asphalt shingles with light or cool-colored granules among cool roof products and reports that solar reflectance from a cool roof can cut peak cooling demand by 11 to 27 percent in air-conditioned homes. In practice the HOA palette limits you: Twin Creeks in Allen and Castle Hills in Carrollton pre-approve Weathered Wood, Driftwood and Pewter Gray, and the last two are the lighter picks.

Max Def Moire Black architectural shingle installation in progress on a two-story Plano, TX home Max Def Moire Black going on a two-story Plano home. It is our most requested color and the hottest surface in the palette, which is why we pair it with full ridge-and-soffit venting.

Color is the tiebreaker. The impact rating and the ventilation are the decision.

what this costs on a real dfw roof.

Roof area runs about 1.2 to 1.3 times the home’s square footage, and most full DFW replacements land between $14,500 and $32,000 depending on tier, pitch (which adds 5, 10 or 15 percent) and the county permit ($95 to $250 in Collin, $125 to $300 in Dallas). Single-story replacements usually finish in one day, two-story in two.

The line-item breakdown by home size, county and tier is in our Texas roof replacement cost guide, and the free roof cost calculator uses the same owner pricing. Our shingle roofing and full roof replacement pages list the scope we write on every job: tear-off, synthetic underlayment, ice and water in the valleys, six-nail install, ridge vent, and the warranty registration only a ShingleMaster can file.

frequently asked questions.

What is the best shingle for Texas heat? A Class 4 impact-rated architectural shingle in a mid-tone or lighter color over balanced ridge-and-soffit ventilation. Heat ages every asphalt shingle from the attic side, and DFW averages 20.2 days a year at or above 100 degrees, so the venting matters as much as the product. Staying 20 years or more? Standing seam metal beats every shingle on heat.

What is the best shingle for hail in Texas? A UL 2218 Class 4 shingle. CertainTeed Landmark IR and NorthGate are our usual picks, with Malarkey Vista AR as the SBS-modified alternative. After the June 17 2024 storm, none of the 11 Class 4 roofs we inspected were totaled, while 38 of 41 older Class 3 roofs were. Many Texas carriers also discount the windstorm portion of the premium.

Is CertainTeed Landmark Pro a Class 4 shingle? No. Landmark Pro is a heavier Landmark, about 300 pounds per square against 240, with a 15-year StreakFighter algae warranty and a deeper shadow line. It carries no UL 2218 Class 4 rating and earns no windstorm discount. For the rating you need Landmark IR, NorthGate, or another true Class 4 SKU.

Are 3-tab shingles ever worth it in DFW? On a detached garage or a rental about to sell, maybe. On a home you live in, no. A 3-tab roof in North Texas lasts 12 to 15 years, carries a 60 to 70 mph wind rating, and has no Class 4 option. Architectural runs $3.50 to $5.50 per square foot installed and lasts 18 to 22 years, which makes 3-tab the more expensive roof per year.

Do lighter shingle colors keep a Texas attic cooler? Yes, a lighter surface reflects more sun, and the EPA lists shingles with light or cool-colored granules among cool roof products. Color is still the smaller lever. Balanced ridge-and-soffit ventilation moves far more heat out of a DFW attic than a shade change, and a dark Class 4 shingle over a vented attic beats a light 3-tab over a sealed one.

How much do Class 4 shingles cost in Dallas? Class 4 impact shingles run $5.50 to $6.50 per square foot of roof installed, or $65 to $110 per square more than a standard Landmark on the same roof. A 2,400 sq ft Plano home runs about $22,000 in Landmark Pro and about $24,500 in Class 4. Run your own roof through the free roof cost calculator.
