5 inch vs 6 inch, the sizing math by roof square footage.

The single biggest mistake we see on DFW gutter jobs is 5-inch K-style hung on a roof that needs 6-inch. The math is straightforward. A 5-inch K-style trough with a properly placed 2x3 downspout handles up to 1800 square feet of roof drainage per run. A 6-inch K-style with a 3x4 downspout handles up to 3600 square feet. Above 3600 you go to oversized 6-inch with four downspouts or commercial 7-inch.

Worked example. A 2400 square foot Plano roof with two main drainage faces (1200 sq ft each) needs 6-inch K-style with three downspouts, not the 5-inch the previous owner had. Putting 1200 sq ft of runoff through a 5-inch trough during a North Texas thunderstorm overflows the front edge inside 90 seconds. That overflow is what stains your fascia and washes out your beds.

The other variable nobody talks about is rainfall intensity. DFW averages 38 inches of rain per year, but the number that matters for sizing is peak rate. A North Texas thunderstorm can dump 2 to 3 inches per hour over a single cell. That peak rate is what overwhelms an undersized trough. When Mahmoud walks an eave in Lakewood or Preston Hollow, he’s sizing for the peak storm, not the annual total.

k-style vs half-round, the actual differences.

K-style is the modern flat-faced profile you see on 95 percent of DFW homes. It moves more water per inch of width than half-round, costs less, and the flat back sits flush against fascia. Half-round is a semicircular trough that came over from older European and East Coast architecture. It clogs slower because debris slides instead of catching on the inner corner, looks correct on 1920s through 1940s Highland Park and Lakewood homes, and pairs naturally with copper.

The cost delta is real. Half-round runs 1.5x to 2x K-style in aluminum, and copper half-round runs 3x to 5x. We install both. We just won’t sell you half-round if your house is a 1998 ranch where K-style is the right answer.

On historic streets, Old Highland Park, Volk Estates, Beverly Drive, and Armstrong Parkway, we’ve installed copper half-round on homes where the HOA architectural review board required period-correct trim. Mahmoud sat with one homeowner for 45 minutes going through profile drawings before the order went in. That’s the kind of call you don’t trust to a sales rep working off a quota.

aluminum gauge: 0.027 vs 0.032.

Every gutter on every job we install is .032 gauge aluminum. Most box-store and chuck-in-a-truck installers use .027 because it’s cheaper and easier to roll. .027 dents on the first hailstone over an inch, warps when a ladder leans against it, and bends at the hangers in 8 to 10 years. .032 holds shape through a typical North Texas hail season and stays straight under guard load.

The material cost delta is about $0.30 per linear foot. On a 180 foot house that’s $54. The install life delta is 8 to 10 years. Ask any quoting installer what gauge they install. If they don’t know, that’s the answer.

After the April 9 2024 and May 23 2024 hail cells rolled through Frisco and McKinney, Sara fielded back-to-back calls from homeowners whose two-year-old .027 gutters were dented every 18 inches. The shingles took the brunt of the claim, but the gutters were destroyed too. The houses with the .032 we’d installed in 2023 had a few minor dings and stayed in service. That’s the kind of difference $54 buys you.

downspout placement physics most installers ignore.

Rule one: one downspout per 35 linear feet of gutter run, minimum. Rule two: place downspouts at corner concentrations, where two faces of roof drain into the same internal corner. Rule three: never dump a downspout into another downspout, that’s where ice and clog backups start.

Discharge matters as much as placement. A splash block buys you 2 to 3 feet of horizontal distance from the foundation, which is fine on a flat lot. On a slope (Coppell, Flower Mound, Southlake) you need 6 to 10 feet of underground PVC extension daylighted to a low point. Bad downspout placement is how you kill landscaping, void foundation warranties, and create slab heave on Dallas clay.

The expansive clay under most DFW slabs swells and shrinks with moisture. A downspout dumping water at the slab edge in Lake Highlands, Casa Linda, or Devonshire is the most common cause of slab heave we get called out to triage. A $40 underground extension is the cheapest foundation insurance you can buy.

gutter guards: when they work and when they don’t.

Four guard categories, in order of what we actually recommend.

Micro-mesh ($$$). Stainless mesh over an aluminum frame. Keeps out pine needles, shingle granules, and roof grit. In Plano and Frisco yards with mature oaks or pecans, this pays back in 3 to 4 years of skipped cleanings. Our standard guard recommendation.

Reverse curve ($$). Water clings to the curve and debris falls off. Works well in low-pine-needle yards. Can fail in heavy oak leaf years if not pitched correctly.

Foam inserts ($). Don’t. They hold moisture, rot, and become a wick that pulls water under your drip edge.

Plastic screen ($). Don’t. UV degrades them in 2 to 3 Texas summers and they sag into the trough.

If a quoting contractor pushes foam or plastic screen as their premium option, that’s a sign.

Most full-home seamless aluminum installs we do land between $1,800 and $4,200, depending on linear footage, downspout count, and guard choice. A typical 2,400 sq ft Plano home running 180 linear feet of 6-inch K-style with three downspouts and micro-mesh guards runs roughly $3,600, and copper half-round on a 1932 Highland Park Tudor runs higher, often $9,000 to $14,000 depending on perimeter. After every major North Texas storm, out-of-state crews flood Plano and Frisco driveways with door-knock flyers and “free roof” promises. They sign you to an ACV-only contract, take the first carrier check, and disappear before the supplement gets filed. They do the same thing with gutters. 1. Eave measurement and runoff math. We measure linear footage, calculate the square footage of roof draining into each run, and spec 5-inch vs 6-inch + downspout count from the numbers, not a guess.
2. Material, gauge, and color call. .032 aluminum is our default. We confirm K-style vs half-round, color match to your fascia, and lock guard choice (micro-mesh, reverse curve, or none) before the truck rolls.
3. Fascia and drip edge inspection. Before a single hanger goes in, Mahmoud walks the eave for soft fascia, missing drip edge, and rotted sub-fascia. We replace the wood that needs replacing so the gutters hang into something solid.
