Micro-mesh is what we install on roughly 80 percent of jobs. Reverse curve is the right call on a smaller subset of homes (more on that below). Foam and screen we don’t install at all, because we’d rather lose the sale than put something on your house we’ll be replacing in 18 months.

A 200 linear foot single-story house is roughly 4 to 6 hours of ladder time for one person, assuming you already own the ladder. The DIY guards sold at big-box retailers are almost always plastic screen or aluminum mesh with a 5 to 7 year service life, not 25-year stainless micro-mesh. They install by screwing through the front lip of your gutter, which voids most aluminum gutter manufacturer warranties on contact. And the fall risk on a two-story house is not a small thing. CDC data puts ladder falls at roughly 164,000 emergency room visits a year in the US.

This is the thing most homeowners don’t find out until after the install. Aluminum seamless gutters from manufacturers like Ply Gem, Spectra, and Englert carry warranties between 20 years and lifetime on the gutter material itself. Almost every one of those warranties has language that voids coverage if a non-OEM accessory is screwed through the front lip or interferes with the hanger system.
We install every guard product per the gutter manufacturer’s published install spec. That usually means hidden-hanger mount, hanger-clip mount, or roof-flashing mount, never face-screwed through the front lip. Your gutter warranty stays valid, and you get the guard warranty on top.

how we decide between micro-mesh and reverse curve on your house.
The decision comes down to three factors, in this order. First, what trees are within 30 feet of the gutter line. Live oak, pecan, pine, and sycamore push us toward micro-mesh every time. Maple, crepe myrtle, and no canopy at all open up reverse curve as a valid option.
Second, the gutter pitch and condition. Reverse curve only performs on gutters with correct pitch (about 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward the downspout). If your existing gutters are sagging or back-pitched, we’ll either re-pitch them or recommend micro-mesh, which is more forgiving.
Third, the roof pitch above the gutter. Steeper roofs (8/12 and up) push water harder, which can overshoot a reverse curve in heavy rain. Micro-mesh handles high-velocity water without overshoot.
