the signs of wind damage to a dallas roof.

Most wind damage never shows from the driveway, which is exactly why carriers get away with denying it. By the time you see a ceiling stain, the seal strip has been open for weeks. Here is what we look for on the roof, slope by slope. Lifted and curled shingle tabs that no longer lie flat. Creased shingles, where wind folded a tab up and it cracked along the fold even after it fell back down. A straight horizontal line of unsealed shingles, the failure roofers call zippering. Missing shingles with bare underlayment or decking showing. Displaced, cracked, or blown-off ridge cap and hip cap. Granule piles in the gutters and at the base of the downspouts. Exposed or backed-out nails. Fascia pulling away from the rake board and soffit panels punched loose. Inside, water stains and damp insulation in the attic. A single creased shingle is a repair. A roof full of broken seal strips is a replacement, and the difference is worth thousands, so we document every one with a photo and a tape measure for scale.

what wind speed actually damages a roof.

Homeowners assume it takes a tornado. It does not. Asphalt shingles start failing well below the wind speeds that make the news, and DFW thunderstorms clear those thresholds most springs. Here is how wind speed translates to roof damage in North Texas.

Wind speedWhat happens to the roofDFW frequency
45 to 57 mphAged or poorly sealed shingles lift and lose their seal stripCommon spring gust
58 to 74 mphTabs tear off, creasing, granule loss, ridge cap starts to liftNWS “damaging wind” threshold, several times a season
75 to 89 mphWidespread shingle loss, displaced ridge cap, fascia and soffit damageStraight-line winds, strong supercell front
90 mph and upDecking and sheathing damage, gable and structural failureDerecho, EF1 and stronger

The takeaway is that a roof does not need a direct tornado hit to take a coverable wind loss. A 60 to 70 mph straight-line gust on a roof with a few years on it is enough to break seal strips across whole slopes. We pull the NOAA storm data for your exact ZIP and the event date so the wind speed on record backs up what is on your roof.

how wind lifts, creases, and zippers shingles.

Wind does not just rip shingles off. It works in stages, and understanding the stages is how you win the claim. First, uplift pressure gets under the tab edge and breaks the factory adhesive seal strip. Once that seal is broken the shingle is loose even if it falls back down, and it will not reseal reliably in the Texas heat. Second, repeated gusts fold the loose tab up and back, creasing it along a line that cracks the mat, so the shingle is now structurally compromised whether or not it is still on the roof. Third, the failure runs sideways along the course, unsealing neighbor after neighbor, which is the zippered line we look for. Fourth, the fully unsealed tabs tear off and expose the underlayment and nail heads, and that is when the leak starts. A roof can be at stage two across half its slopes and look completely normal from the ground. That hidden, broken-seal stage is the damage adjusters love to miss and the reason a ground-level or drive-by inspection costs you the claim.

the wind-only insurance claim trap.

Wind claims get underpaid and denied more than any other roof peril in DFW, and it is almost always a documentation game. Here are the three traps and how we beat them. Trap one, “wear and tear.” The carrier looks at lifted shingles and calls them old and worn instead of wind-damaged, which moves them from covered to excluded. We beat it by photographing the broken seal strip and the crease line and tying them to a dated wind event with NOAA data, because aged shingles wear at the granule surface while wind damage breaks the seal and folds the tab. Trap two, “installation defect.” The carrier blames the original roofer’s nailing instead of the wind. We beat it by documenting the wind pattern across the roof, since a defect shows up in clusters near fasteners while wind damage follows the prevailing gust direction across exposed slopes. Trap three, the wind-versus-hail downgrade. The carrier writes a cheap wind-only patch to avoid a hail replacement, or denies a wind claim by insisting it is really hail you filed late. We beat it by documenting both perils in one inspection so the photos set the scope. We file the claim with the wind line items already written in Xactimate, the same software your adjuster uses, and when the first scope comes back short we file a supplement with the photos to back it. If your carrier is State Farm, Allstate, USAA, Farmers, or Liberty Mutual, we have handled wind claims with all of them across DFW and we document to match how each one reads a roof.

repair or replace, the honest wind-damage decision.

Not every wind loss is a new roof, and we will tell you which one you have. We repair when the damage is isolated to a slope or two, the decking under it is sound, and we can still source a shingle that matches your existing color and profile. We replace when wind has broken the seal across a large share of the roof, when the damaged area crosses the threshold Texas carriers use to approve a full replacement under the 25 percent rule, or when your shingle line has been discontinued and a spot repair would leave an obvious mismatched patch that hurts resale. The discontinued-shingle problem is bigger than people expect. If your roof is more than about eight years old, the exact shingle is often out of production, and a carrier that owes you a matching repair under Texas matching rules frequently owes you a slope or a full replacement instead. We document the manufacturer, line, and color so the matching argument is on the record. Run the numbers on our free roof cost calculator, and ask about our in-house zero interest payment plans on qualifying projects.

the rapid roof response process.

Rapid Roof Response is the name we give our 24/7 storm dispatch protocol. Six steps from the first call to warranty registration, no scope creep, no disappearing acts.

  1. The first call. You dial (214) 326-3106 and reach a live person, 24/7 during storm season. Sara or a Roof Raiders operations lead logs your address, the wind event date, the carrier name, and any active leaks. We dispatch the next available crew before we hang up.
  2. Secure the roof. If shingles are gone and water is coming in, a crew is on your roof with heavy-mil tarp and battens within hours, anchored without driving nails through good decking. The clock on drywall, insulation, and mold stops.
  3. The free photo-documented inspection. Mahmoud or a senior crew lead climbs every accessible slope, photographs each lifted seal, crease, and missing shingle with a tape measure for scale, and writes the wind scope in Xactimate line items. You get the PDF before you call your carrier.
  4. Carrier filing with documentation in hand. We coach you through the claim call. You file with photos, measurements, the NOAA wind data, and the damage percentage already documented, so the adjuster cannot quietly call it wear and tear.
  5. Adjuster meet-and-walk. Mahmoud meets your adjuster on the roof, walks the wind-uplifted sections, defends the line items, and files a supplement the same day if the carrier’s scope misses damage or code we documented.
  6. Install, final inspection, warranty registration. Tear-off, decking check, synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield in valleys, high-wind nailing, sealed ridge, new flashing, and CertainTeed shingles to spec. We register the roof with CertainTeed at the highest tier our ShingleMaster certification unlocks before we leave the driveway.

wind ratings and what survives the next dallas storm.

If you are already opening the roof for a wind claim, upgrading the wind rating is the cheapest it will ever be. Here is how the ratings translate for DFW, and why the nailing pattern matters as much as the shingle.

Wind ratingWhat it takesTypical productDFW payoff
60 to 70 mphAged or 4-nail install with a failing sealOld builder-grade roofThis is what just blew off
110 mphStandard 6-nail installCertainTeed LandmarkBaseline new roof
130 mphHigh-wind nailing plus starter strip and sealed ridgeLandmark ProBest value for DFW wind exposure
150 mphEnhanced fastening and sealant packagePresidential TL, Northgate ClimateFlexTop survivability, pairs with Class 4 hail

A shingle is only rated to its wind number when it is installed with the matching nailing pattern, which is why a “130 mph” shingle put down with four nails and no starter is really a 70 mph roof. We install the high-wind 6-nail pattern, a sealed starter course, and a sealed ridge on every replacement, so the rating on the wrapper is the rating on your roof. Going to Class 4 impact at the same time usually adds $1,400 to $2,200 on a 2,400 sq ft Plano roof and can earn a windstorm premium discount with most Texas carriers.

dfw wind events and the storm timeline carriers honor.

North Texas sits on the southern edge of Tornado Alley, and most of our wind losses are not tornadoes at all, they are straight-line winds and the gust front ahead of a supercell. The wind events Texas carriers still honor claims against include the May 28 2023 McKinney derecho, with gusts over 80 mph that stripped roofs from McKinney south through Plano and Frisco, and the June 17 2024 late-spring wind and tree-damage event across the I-30 corridor through Mesquite and Garland. If your damage dates to a documented wind event, the causation argument is mostly already won, and we overlay the NOAA storm track on your scope so the carrier sees the wind on record for your exact address. Peak season runs March through June, the same window as hail, which is why so many DFW roofs take wind and hail in the same storm and need both documented.

How it works

  1. Step 1, the first call to Rapid Roof Response. You call (214) 326-3106 and reach a live person 24/7 during storm season. We log your address, the wind event date, and any active leaks, then dispatch the next available crew before we hang up.
  2. Step 2, secure the roof within hours. If shingles are missing or lifted and water is getting in, a Roof Raiders crew runs heavy-mil tarp anchored with battens over the open sections, not nails through your decking. Tarping stops the clock on drywall sag, insulation loss, and mold.
  3. Step 3, the free photo-documented inspection. Mahmoud or a senior crew lead climbs every slope and photographs lifted seal strips, creased tabs, missing shingles, displaced ridge cap, and exposed nails with a tape measure for scale, then writes the wind line items in Xactimate. You get the PDF before you call your carrier.
  4. Step 4, file the wind claim with documentation in hand. We coach you through the carrier call with a wind-specific scope so the adjuster cannot quietly downgrade real storm damage to "wear and tear." First-pass approval rates jump when the homeowner brings the documentation instead of asking the adjuster to find it.
  5. Step 5, meet the adjuster on the roof. We meet your adjuster on site, walk the wind-uplifted sections, defend the line items, and file a supplement the same day if the carrier's scope misses creased shingles, ridge cap, or code items we documented.
  6. Step 6, install, inspect, and register the warranty. Tear-off, decking check, synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield, high-wind nailing pattern, sealed ridge, new flashing, and CertainTeed shingles installed to manufacturer spec. We register the roof with CertainTeed at the highest tier our ShingleMaster certification unlocks before we leave the driveway.
