the 5 signs your gutters are past repair.
Repair makes sense for isolated leaks or a single sagging hanger. Replacement makes sense when the system is failing across the board. Here’s what we look for when we walk a roof:
Rust-through on steel or galvanized. Once you can see pinholes or daylight through the gutter floor, sealant is a band-aid. Water finds the next weak spot within a season.
Seam separation past 1/4 inch. Sectional gutters have a joint every 10 feet. When those joints pull open more than a quarter inch, you can’t re-seal them. The aluminum has stretched.
Fascia rot from chronic backflow. If you press a screwdriver into the fascia board behind the gutter and it sinks, water has been wicking back for years. Rotten fascia won’t hold new hangers.
Foundation cracking from poor drainage. When downspouts dump within 3 feet of the slab, expansive North Texas clay swells and shrinks. We’ve seen Allen homes with foundation movement traced directly back to two undersized downspouts.
Sagging mid-span and paint failure system-wide. When hangers have torn out at multiple points and the fascia-side paint has bubbled across most runs, the system is at end of life.

Material choice drives 60 percent of the price difference and 100 percent of the lifespan difference. Here’s how the four common options stack up:

.032 Aluminum is the DFW workhorse. It’s what goes on 80 percent of the homes we replace. It won’t rust, it takes baked enamel color well, and at $8 to $12 per linear foot installed it’s the right price for most Plano, Frisco, and Richardson homes. The downside is hail dents. A 1.5 inch hailstone will leave visible dimples.
Galvalume is the upgrade. It’s a 26 gauge steel gutter coated in a zinc-aluminum alloy. It costs roughly 50 percent more than aluminum but lasts twice as long and shrugs off hail that would dent aluminum. We install a lot of Galvalume on Southlake and Highland Park properties where the owner doesn’t want to replace gutters again.
Copper is for architectural homes. Tudors, traditionals, and high-end custom homes in Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and Westlake. 16 oz copper costs $30 to $50 per linear foot installed and lasts the life of the house. It develops a green patina over 7 to 15 years that most owners want.
Galvanized steel is legacy. If you’re replacing old galvanized gutters today, don’t replace them with more galvanized. The zinc coating rusts through within 10 to 15 years in DFW humidity. Spend the extra $2 per foot for Galvalume.

5 vs 6 inch, the dfw sizing math.
This is the decision most homeowners get wrong, and it’s the one that causes overflow problems within a year of install.
5 inch K-style moves water from roof footprints up to about 1,800 square feet. Pair it with 2x3 downspouts and you’re fine for a one-story ranch or smaller two-story.
6 inch K-style moves about 40 percent more water and handles roof footprints up to 3,600 square feet. Pair it with 3x4 downspouts for high-volume runs.
Worked example: a 2,400 square foot Plano home with a moderate 6/12 pitch. The roof footprint after accounting for pitch is roughly 2,650 square feet. That’s well past the 5 inch threshold. The right spec is 6 inch gutters with three 3x4 downspouts, two on the long sides and one at the rear corner.
If a contractor quotes you 5 inch gutters on a home over 1,800 square feet, ask why. The cheaper material cost isn’t worth the overflow at every spring storm.
seamless vs sectional and what gets installed on residential vs commercial.
Seamless. We pull up in a coil truck, feed an aluminum or Galvalume coil through an on-site forming machine, and roll out a single continuous length of gutter to match each run on your house. The only seams are at corners and downspout outlets, both sealed with tripolymer sealant rated for 50 year flex life.
Sectional. Pre-cut 10 foot lengths from a big box store, joined with snap connectors and caulk. They leak at every joint within 3 to 5 years. We almost never install sectional on residential anymore.
For commercial flat roof buildings we sometimes spec sectional commercial-grade box gutters because the runs are too long for a single coil and the seams are welded, not snapped. But for residential, seamless is the only answer.

Same 5-step process we run on every roof and gutter job:
1. Free on-site audit. We walk every linear foot of your existing gutters, measure pitch, check fascia for rot, count downspouts, and photograph every failure point. No drone shots, no guessing from the ground.
2. Written scope with options. You get a line-item quote within 24 hours showing aluminum, Galvalume, and (if you want) copper pricing side by side. Sizing recommendation is included with the math behind it.
3. Color, profile, and downspout count locked in. We bring physical color samples to your house. 5 inch vs 6 inch is decided based on your roof footprint, not what we want to sell.
4. One-day seamless install. Most replacements finish in a single day. We form on-site, remove the old system, install new hangers 24 inches on center with stainless screws, hang the seamless runs, install downspouts and splash blocks, and seal every miter and outlet.
5. Water test and walk-through. Before we leave, we run a hose at every high point of the roof and watch the water flow down each downspout. You sign off on the work after you see it perform.

what gutter replacement costs in dallas.
Real numbers from real jobs we ran in 2024 and 2025. These assume single-story access on most of the run, no fascia rot, and standard 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts.
.032 aluminum, 5 inch: $8 to $10 per linear foot installed. A 200 linear foot Richardson ranch ran $1,800. A 320 linear foot two-story Frisco home with 6 inch upgrade ran $3,840.
.032 aluminum, 6 inch: $10 to $12 per linear foot installed. Most of our Plano, McKinney, and Allen replacements land here.
Galvalume, 6 inch: $14 to $18 per linear foot installed. A 240 linear foot Southlake home in Galvalume ran $3,840 with three 3x4 downspouts.
16 oz copper: $30 to $50 per linear foot installed. A 180 linear foot Highland Park home in copper ran $7,200 with copper downspouts and round profiles.
Add roughly $40 to $80 per downspout if we’re adding new ones beyond the existing count. Fascia rot repair runs $8 to $14 per linear foot of board.
the storm scope adjusters miss on gutters.
When adjusters write a hail claim, they almost always scope the roof and almost always under-scope the gutters. Three line items we routinely document and add via supplement:
Hail-bruised gutter floors. Even when dents are subtle, repeated hail impacts compromise the coating and accelerate rust on Galvalume and galvanized. Photograph with a tape measure for scale.
Dented downspouts. Downspouts catch sideways hail. A dented 2x3 downspout restricts flow by 20 to 40 percent and won’t drain a 6 inch gutter properly.
Bent fasteners and pulled hangers. When hangers fail during a storm, the carrier will often pay for re-hang or full replacement if they’re shown the scope.
We don’t negotiate claims (Texas Insurance Code 4102.163 prohibits that), but we do document thoroughly and meet your adjuster on site so nothing gets missed.
the texas 25 percent rule, what carriers actually require.
Texas Administrative Code 28 TAC 21.1006 requires gutter and roof replacement to bring the structure to current building code if more than 25 percent of the roof or attached drainage system is being replaced within any 12 month period.
What that means for gutters: if your storm damage requires replacing more than a quarter of your existing gutter linear footage, the carrier owes the cost of bringing the rest of the drainage system into code compliance. That includes proper downspout sizing, splash blocks at slab discharge, and any missing drip edge integration.
Most adjusters know this rule. A few don’t. We document it on every supplement.
dfw weather and the storm timeline carriers honor.
DFW hail events have been frequent and severe. The storms most carriers still honor on gutter claims:
- May 28, 2023 Plano and Frisco line, 2 to 3 inch hail
- April 9, 2024 Highland Park and Dallas, golf ball plus
- May 23, 2024 Allen, McKinney, Prosper, baseball-sized in pockets
- June 17, 2024 widespread DFW, multiple 1.5 to 2 inch reports
If you had gutter damage from any of those storms and haven’t filed, most carriers honor claims for 1 to 2 years from the date of loss depending on policy language. Pull your policy and check.

anti-storm-chaser warning.
After every DFW hail storm, out-of-state crews flood the neighborhood with door-knockers offering to “handle your claim.” Don’t sign anything on the doorstep.
The red flags to watch for: out-of-state license plates, assignment-of-benefits or contingency contracts pushed at your door, no verifiable local address, and pressure to sign before your adjuster has even seen the damage. Texas Insurance Code 4102.163 makes it illegal for any roofer to negotiate or adjust your claim, so walk away from anyone who offers. Roof Raiders has been in Plano since 2022.
