Dallas sits dead center in the Texas hail belt, and the difference between a $2,000 deductible and a $24,000 out-of-pocket job is almost always the contractor standing next to your adjuster on the roof. Since 2022 we’ve registered every roof we install with CertainTeed at the highest tier our ShingleMaster certification unlocks, ranking us in the top 3 percent of US roofers. We’re family-owned in Plano with Mahmoud Abu Saad and Sara Bannat running the shop out of Legacy Drive, see all credentials and read why we started. What’s below is the playbook we use on every hail claim from Plano to Highland Park, written so you can tell a real claim from a storm-chaser shakedown before you sign anything. If your roof took wind as well as hail, our wind damage roof repair page covers how the two perils are filed and paid differently.

what hail damage actually looks like up close.

There are three signatures carriers care about, and they look nothing alike from eight feet up. A bruise (soft hit) shows up as a round, slightly soft spot with granules knocked off and the black asphalt mat peeking through. Press it with a thumb and you feel the give. A fracture (hard hit) is a crisp star or crescent crack through the mat itself, usually 1 to 2 inches across, and it’s the easiest sell to an adjuster because the shingle’s waterproofing layer is broken. Granule loss patterns are the third signature, random scour on the south and west slopes that took the brunt of the storm, with pooled granules in the gutter as collateral evidence.

Soft-metal collateral is the fourth signature most homeowners miss, and it’s the one that turns a maybe-claim into a paid claim. Hail dents on AC condenser fins, gutter aprons, garage door panels, mailbox lids, and window screens prove a storm threw stones big enough to bruise asphalt, even when the shingles themselves are borderline. We photograph every soft-metal dent we find and include it in the claim packet because adjusters trained to deny shingle claims will pay collateral damage on the same property. For a walkthrough you can do from the ground before we arrive, read our guide on how to tell if hail damaged your roof.

the dallas hail timeline insurance carriers care about.

Carriers won’t pay on “we think it hailed sometime.” They want a date, and there are four recent events the DFW desks honor without argument: April 9, 2024 (the Plano and Frisco swath, 2 to 3 inch stones), May 23, 2024 (McKinney and Allen, dense small-stone barrage that scoured west slopes), June 17, 2024 (the Highland Park and East Dallas event), and May 28, 2023 (the wide Collin County storm that’s still triggering claims). We pull the NOAA hail-swath shapefile for your address and attach it to the claim packet, which kills the “this is wear and tear” denial before it gets written.

dfw weather and the storm timeline carriers honor.

DFW averages 38 inches of rain per year and the heaviest hail cells run April through June, tracking the US-75 corridor from McKinney south through Plano and Frisco into East Dallas and Lakewood. Peak hail months are April, May, and June, with September throwing in a wild-card cell every few years that hits Highland Park and University Park before anyone is watching the radar. The four storm dates Texas carriers honor without argument are May 28, 2023, April 9, 2024, May 23, 2024, and June 17, 2024. If your roof took stones on any of those dates and we can match your address to the NOAA swath, the claim writes itself. If you’re outside those dates, we still pull the shapefile for whatever event you think hit, because there were 18 separate hail-producing storms in the DFW metro between March and July 2024 alone.

the texas 25 percent rule, what carriers actually require.

Texas Administrative Code 28 TAC 21.1006 is the rule every storm-chaser hopes you don’t know about. It allows carriers to require that 25 percent of the total roof area be storm-damaged before they approve a full replacement rather than a slope-by-slope repair. That sounds like a high bar until you realize “total roof area” means the documented test squares plus the soft-metal collateral plus the granule loss patterns plus the fractures, all weighted across every slope and not just the one the adjuster looked at from the ladder.

The way carriers actually apply this rule comes down to documentation. If your contractor chalk-marks four 10-by-10 test squares per slope and counts the hits inside each square, that’s the data the adjuster’s Xactimate scope is built on. If your contractor walks around with a phone and waves at the roof, the adjuster decides what counts. We document every slope with chalk-marked test squares, photograph each square with a date stamp and a slope-identifier card, and submit the count in the scope packet. On a 2,400 sq ft roof, that’s typically 16 test squares, 4 to 8 hits per square on the storm-side slopes, which clears the 25 percent threshold cleanly and gives the adjuster cover to approve the full replacement his desk already wants to approve.

acv vs rcv, the dollar difference for a 2400 sq ft roof.

Most Texas policies are RCV with depreciation held back. Here’s how that plays out on a real 2,400 sq ft Plano hip roof, 8/12 pitch, Landmark Pro tear-off:

line itemamount
RCV total scope (Xactimate)$22,000
Depreciation held back (30 percent, 12-year roof)$6,600
First check, ACV$15,400
Deductible (2 percent of $200k dwelling)$2,000
Net first check to homeowner$13,400
Final check at completion (depreciation released)$6,600
Total carrier paid out$22,000

The catch: that $6,600 only comes if a contractor completes the scope, files a certificate of completion, and submits the supplement for anything the original scope missed. Storm-chasers who take the ACV check and disappear leave you eating the $6,600 yourself. We file the supplement and chase the depreciation release as part of the job, not as an extra.

payment plans, real numbers.

A 2,400 sq ft Plano replacement with Landmark Pro runs roughly $22,000. On qualifying projects we offer an in-house zero interest payment plan: a larger upfront deposit gets the work started and the balance is split over flexible terms depending on the size of the project. Cash jobs are always welcome, and covered insurance claims pay for most storm work after your own deductible. Details on our payment plans page.

what a storm-chaser contractor takes from you.

You’ll see them within 48 hours of a storm: door knockers with magnetic truck signs, an out-of-state LLC, a “free roof” promise, and a contract that quietly locks you to ACV-only payment. They take the first check, slap on builder-grade three-tab, never file the supplement, and the depreciation stays with the carrier. No warranty, no verifiable local address, and the phone number dies in 90 days. We’ve cleaned up two of these in West Plano this spring and one off a denied USAA claim in Frisco where the homeowner lost $8,400 in unrecovered depreciation. If the contract says ACV and doesn’t mention supplements or RCV release, walk away.

anti-storm-chaser warning.

After every major North Texas storm, out-of-state crews flood Plano and Frisco driveways with door-knock flyers and “free roof” promises. They sign you to an ACV-only contract, take the first carrier check, and disappear before the supplement gets filed. By the time you realize the depreciation never released and the ridge cap is already lifting in the first windstorm, the LLC on the contract is dissolved, the cell number rings to a disconnected line, and the carrier won’t reopen a claim a different contractor “completed.” We’ve taken the cleanup calls. The pattern is always the same: cheap three-tab over old felt, no drip edge, no ice-and-water shield, no certificate of completion filed, no warranty registration. If the crew in your driveway can’t show you a Texas address, a CertainTeed credential page, and a sample contract that names supplements and RCV release in writing, close the door.

how we run a clean hail claim, start to finish.

  1. Free inspection, day-of or day-after. We climb the roof, chalk-mark every hit on a 10-by-10 test square per slope, photograph soft-metal collateral (AC fins, gutter aprons, window screens, vent caps), and hand you a multi-page report sized for a carrier intake.
  2. NOAA swath pull tied to your address. We attach the National Weather Service hail-swath data for the storm date so your carrier can’t argue the damage is unrelated.
  3. Carrier filing with a documented scope. We help you open the claim the same day and submit our Xactimate-style scope so the adjuster shows up with our numbers in hand, not a blank pad.
  4. Adjuster meeting on the roof. Mahmoud or a crew lead walks the roof with your adjuster, points out hits in the test squares, and gets agreement on the scope before they leave the driveway. This is where claims are won or lost.
  5. Supplement filing and RCV release. After the install, we file the supplement for code upgrades (decking, drip edge, ice-and-water shield to code), submit the certificate of completion, and the carrier cuts the depreciation check.

the rapid roof response process.

We call our 24/7 storm dispatch protocol Rapid Roof Response. It’s how we move a Plano or Frisco homeowner from the moment hail stops falling to a fully registered CertainTeed warranty without losing money to depreciation, supplements, or storm-chasers along the way.

  1. First call, same day. You call (214) 326-3106 and we book the inspection inside 24 hours, faster if there’s an active leak. Mahmoud or a crew lead is on the roof with chalk, a camera, and a NOAA swath printout the next morning.
  2. Documented inspection report. We chalk-mark test squares per slope, photograph every hit and every piece of soft-metal collateral, pull the NOAA hail-swath shapefile for your address, and hand you a multi-page packet sized for a carrier intake. No claim to file? You get the photos either way and we don’t charge a dime.
  3. Carrier filing and adjuster meeting. We help you open the claim with State Farm, Allstate, USAA, or Farmers the same day, submit our Xactimate-style scope ahead of the adjuster visit, and meet the adjuster on the roof so the scope is agreed in the driveway, not negotiated by mail three weeks later.
  4. Install with claim-approved CertainTeed materials. Once the scope is signed, we order materials, dry-in the deck with synthetic underlayment and ice-and-water shield, and tear off plus install in a single day with our ShingleMaster crew. Sara coordinates the schedule personally so you know who’s in your driveway and when.
  5. Supplement filing and depreciation release. We file the supplement for missed line items (code upgrades, ridge, drip edge, decking), submit the certificate of completion that releases your depreciation check, and verify the carrier cuts it inside 30 days.
  6. CertainTeed warranty registration. Within 30 days of completion we register the roof with CertainTeed at the highest tier our ShingleMaster certification unlocks. You get SureStart Plus coverage in writing plus our workmanship warranty, and the registration document gets emailed to you so you have it on file when you sell the house.

carrier-specific notes for texas homeowners.

Every carrier has its own pressure point on the supplement side. State Farm in DFW is reasonable on Xactimate pricing but tight on code upgrades, so we document drip edge and ice-and-water shield against current Plano and Frisco code before the adjuster arrives. Allstate uses a lot of independent adjusters and ladder-assist contractors, who tend to underscope ridge, hip, and starter, so the supplement almost always recovers material there. USAA is the cleanest carrier to work with if the inspection report is solid, and they pay full RCV on accurate Xactimate scopes. Farmers runs lower price-per-square defaults, so we attach supplier invoices to support the scope. Liberty Mutual and Travelers both lean on desk adjusters who never see the roof, so we send the chalk-marked photo packet with slope-identifier cards and the NOAA shapefile up front, which usually settles the scope without an in-person meeting. We don’t fight carriers, we give them the documentation they need to pay.

ready when you are.

Call (214) 326-3106 or request a free post-storm inspection. We’ll be on your roof within 24 hours with chalk, a camera, and the NOAA data, and we’ll tell you straight whether you’ve got a claim worth filing. No claim, no charge. Mahmoud and Sara built Roof Raiders in 2022 after Sara was laid off at 40 weeks pregnant, and the rule we run the shop by is simple: we’d rather walk away from a job than write a claim that won’t pay or sign a homeowner to a contract that doesn’t recover their full RCV.

How it works

  1. Free inspection with date-stamped photos. We climb the roof same-week, chalk-mark every bruise and fracture, and photograph soft-metal collateral on gutters, AC fins, and window screens. You get a multi-page report sized for a carrier intake.
  2. NOAA swath pull tied to your address. We match your property to documented hail events on April 9 2024, May 23 2024, June 17 2024, or May 28 2023, so the carrier can't argue the damage is "wear and tear."
  3. Carrier filing with a documented scope. We help you file with State Farm, Allstate, USAA, or Farmers the same day, and submit an Xactimate-style scope so the adjuster shows up with our numbers in hand.
  4. Adjuster meeting on the roof. Mahmoud or a crew lead walks every slope with your adjuster, points out hits they'd otherwise miss, and gets agreement on the scope before they leave the driveway.
  5. Supplement filing and install. We file the supplement for missed line items (code upgrades, ridge, drip edge), order claim-approved CertainTeed materials, and complete the install with our ShingleMaster crew.
  6. Certificate of completion and warranty registration. We submit the certificate of completion that releases your depreciation check, then register the roof with CertainTeed at the highest tier our ShingleMaster certification unlocks.
