If you’re staring up at a Dallas roof that’s curling, balding, or pockmarked from the last hail run, you’re in the right place. We install architectural shingle roofing across DFW every week, and this page walks you through the four shingle tiers, the three brand families, what a real scope of work includes, and what it actually costs in 2026 dollars. No fluff, no upsell theater.
We’re CertainTeed ShingleMaster certified (top 3 percent of US roofers) and family-owned in Plano, see all credentials. Mahmoud Abu Saad and Sara Bannat started Roof Raiders & Co. in 2022 after Sara was laid off at 40 weeks pregnant, and that origin still shapes how we run jobs, read the full story. 5.0 stars on Google, 47+ reviews, every one of them earned.

the four asphalt shingle tiers we install in dallas.
Asphalt shingle is a category, not a product. There are four real tiers, and the gap between them matters more than most homeowners realize until they’ve lived under both.
3-Tab. Flat single-layer shingle, around 25-year warranty, 60 to 70 mph wind rating. We install these on rental properties, garage apartments, and tight-budget Mesquite and Grand Prairie homes where the seller needs a clean inspection report and not much more. CertainTeed XT 25 and GAF Royal Sovereign are the workhorses here.
Architectural (Laminate / Dimensional). Two bonded asphalt layers, 110 to 130 mph wind rating, 30 to 50-year manufacturer warranty depending on accessories. This is what goes on roughly 9 out of 10 homes we touch in Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, and Richardson. CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark Pro, GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration.
Designer / Premium. Heavier, deeper shadow lines, sculpted to mimic wood shake or slate. 130 mph wind rating, lifetime warranty when registered. We install these on Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and Southlake homes where the HOA architectural committee or the original slate roofline calls for it. CertainTeed Presidential and Carriage House, GAF Camelot II, Owens Corning Berkshire.
Class 4 Impact-Rated. UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating asphalt can earn. Qualifies for a 5 to 15 percent windstorm-portion insurance discount on most Texas policies. CertainTeed Landmark Solaris IR, GAF ArmorShield II, Owens Corning Duration FLEX or ProArmor.
| Tier | Wind rating | Warranty | MSRP delta per sq ft | When we recommend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-Tab | 60-70 mph | 25 yr | baseline | Rentals, flips, tight budget |
| Architectural | 110-130 mph | 30-50 yr | +$1.50-2.50 | Default for 90% of DFW homes |
| Designer | 130 mph | Lifetime | +$4.00-6.00 | HOA-restricted, high-end resale |
| Class 4 Impact | 110-130 mph | 50 yr / Lifetime | +$2.00-3.50 | Hail-belt homes, insurance discount |
certainteed vs gaf vs owens corning, the brand verdict.
We install all three. We don’t get a bonus check from any of them. Here’s the honest read.
CertainTeed. We’re a ShingleMaster, which is the highest-tier installer credential CertainTeed offers and lets us register the SureStart PLUS warranty in your name. The Landmark series is the most popular architectural shingle in DFW for a reason: it lays flat, the shadow line is the cleanest of the three brands, and the granule adhesion has held up well on jobs we did in 2022 that have already seen four hail seasons. Landmark Pro and Landmark Premium add weight. Presidential is the Designer line. Landmark Solaris is the Class 4.
GAF. Timberline HDZ is the volume product, with the LayerLock technology and the StainGuard Plus algae-resistance. UHDZ is the heavier upgrade with the deeper shadow line, closer to a Designer look at an Architectural price. ArmorShield II is the Class 4. GAF’s strength is the Golden Pledge warranty when installed by a Master Elite contractor. Their accessory system (Pro-Start starter, Cobra ridge vent, Deck-Armor underlayment) is genuinely tight.
Owens Corning. Duration is the Architectural workhorse with SureNail technology, which is the visible reinforced nailing strip. TruDefinition adds the high-contrast color blend. Berkshire is the Designer line. Duration FLEX and ProArmor cover the Class 4 category. We install Owens Corning when a homeowner specifically asks for it or when color matching to an existing structure calls for a Duration palette.

If you don’t have a brand preference, we default to CertainTeed Landmark or Landmark Pro because of the ShingleMaster warranty registration. If you want the heaviest Architectural shingle on the market without jumping to Designer pricing, GAF UHDZ is our second pick. All three are good roofs when installed correctly. The install matters more than the logo.

what makes class 4 different and is it worth the upgrade.
Class 4 means the shingle survived a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet under UL 2218 testing, without cracking the asphalt mat. Standard Architectural shingle is Class 3, which tops out at 1.75 inches. That 0.25-inch gap is the difference between a hail bruise and a punch-through on a North Texas storm.
The financial argument is simpler than people think. Most Texas homeowner policies offer a 5 to 15 percent discount on the windstorm and hail portion of the premium when you install a Class 4 shingle. On a typical Frisco or McKinney policy with a $2,400 annual windstorm portion, a 10 percent discount is $240 a year. The Class 4 upgrade typically runs $1,200 to $2,400 over an Architectural install on a 2,400 sq ft home. Payback is 4 to 7 years. After that, the discount is pure savings, and you’ve got a roof that handles the next hail event with fewer claims.

Best Class 4 products we install: CertainTeed Landmark Solaris IR, GAF ArmorShield II, and Owens Corning Duration FLEX or ProArmor. We’ll pull your policy declarations page on the inspection and show you the actual line-item discount your carrier offers before you commit a dollar.
scope-of-work inclusions that matter on every shingle replacement.
This is where most “$199 a square” ads fall apart. The shingle is maybe 40 percent of the job. Here’s what we include on every Roof Raiders shingle replacement, in writing, before you sign.
Full tear-off to the wood deck. No layovers. Texas code allows two layers, but a layover hides decking rot, voids most manufacturer warranties, and traps heat. We strip every shingle, every nail, every piece of old felt.
Decking inspection at a posted per-sheet rate. Our scope shows the price of 7/16 OSB and 1/2 plywood up front. You see every soft or rotten sheet before we cover it. Most Plano homes need zero to two sheets, older East Dallas and Garland homes sometimes four to eight.
Ice and water shield at every valley and 36 inches at every eave. This is a self-adhered waterproof membrane that bonds directly to the deck. It’s the difference between a leak and a non-leak when ice damming hits during a Dallas freeze, and it’s required for high-wind warranty registration.
Synthetic underlayment across the full deck. No 15-pound felt. Felt tears in the Texas heat and rips in the wind during install. Synthetic (CertainTeed RoofRunner, GAF Deck-Armor, Owens Corning ProArmor) is the standard.

New drip edge on eaves and rakes. Color matched to the shingle. We don’t reuse old drip edge.
Step flashing and counter flashing at every wall and chimney. New, not reused. New pipe boots on every plumbing penetration.
Ridge vent or balanced intake/exhaust ventilation sized to your attic square footage. Bad ventilation is the number one shingle warranty killer in Texas. We do the math, not the guess.
Hand-nailed or 6-nail gun pattern. Standard install is 4 nails per shingle. CertainTeed and GAF high-wind warranties require 6. We default to 6 on every job.
Triple magnet sweep. Driveway, yard, street. We don’t leave nails for your tires or your kids’ feet.

the rapid roof response process.
This is the order of operations on every shingle replacement, modeled to be as transparent as anything you’ll find in DFW.
Step 1, free inspection and drone photo set. We climb the roof, fly the drone, document every slope, and hand you a written scope the same visit. No “today only” pricing, no high-pressure pitch from a sales rep who’s never held a nail gun.
Step 2, shingle selection and color board. We bring real shingle samples to your driveway and lay them against your brick, stone, and trim. You see Landmark Weathered Wood next to your actual house, not on a computer screen. If you’re in an HOA (Stonebriar, Starwood, Castle Hills), we pull the approved color list before the meeting.
Step 3, permit pull and material drop. We pull the permit for City of Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, or whichever municipality applies. The dumpster goes on plywood to protect your driveway. Materials stage the day before so the crew starts at 7 a.m. without a delivery wait.
Step 4, one-day tear-off and dry-in. Most 2,400 to 3,200 sq ft homes go from old shingles to dried-in with synthetic underlayment and ice and water shield in a single day. You sleep under a waterproof roof every night. Shingle install runs day two, and on larger Highland Park or Southlake homes we add a third day for cleanup and detail flashing.

Step 5, final walk and warranty registration. Mahmoud or a lead foreman walks the property with you. We run the magnet sweep again, check every penetration, photograph the finished roof, and register your CertainTeed or GAF warranty in your name before we leave the driveway.
what shingle replacement costs in dallas.
Real 2026 numbers for a typical 2,400 sq ft single-family Dallas home (about 24 roofing squares with average pitch and detail).
- 3-Tab: $4.00 to $5.00 per sq ft installed. Roughly $9,600 to $12,000 total.
- Architectural / Laminate: $5.50 to $8.00 per sq ft installed. Roughly $13,200 to $19,200 total. This is the sweet spot for 90 percent of DFW homes.
- Designer / Premium: $9.00 to $14.00 per sq ft installed. Roughly $21,600 to $33,600 total. Common in Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and the older Southlake estates.
- Class 4 Impact-Rated: $7.00 to $11.00 per sq ft installed. Roughly $16,800 to $26,400 total, before the insurance discount payback.

Variables that move the number: steep pitch (8/12 and up), three-story access, decking replacement, chimney and skylight count, ridge vent vs box vent retrofit, and HOA-required color upgrades. Our written scope itemizes every one of these before you sign.
the texas 25 percent rule, what carriers actually require.
If you’re going through an insurance claim, the rule that decides full replacement vs spot repair is 28 TAC 21.1006 in the Texas Administrative Code. The short version: if matching shingles aren’t reasonably available to repair the damaged slope, the carrier owes a full replacement of that slope, and most carriers extend that to the full roof when the damage exceeds roughly 25 percent of the slope or when matching brand, color, and discontinued line isn’t possible.
What that means in practice: when an adjuster scopes hail damage, we document every slope with marked test squares (typically 10 ft by 10 ft), photograph every bruise, and provide a written scope back to the carrier. We meet your adjuster on the roof when scheduling allows so we’re looking at the same shingle at the same time.
What we don’t do: negotiate, adjust, or invoice your carrier on your behalf. Texas Insurance Code 4102.163 reserves that work for licensed public adjusters, and any roofer who promises to “handle your claim” is either crossing that line or selling you a fantasy. We document, inspect, and meet adjusters. You and your carrier handle the claim itself.

how homeowners pay for a shingle roof.
We offer an in-house zero interest payment plan on qualifying projects. A larger upfront deposit gets the work started, and the balance is split over flexible terms depending on the size of the project. Cash jobs are always welcome, and covered insurance claims pay for most storm work after your deductible. Details on our payment plans page.
anti-storm-chaser warning.
Every time a hail line rolls through DFW, the out-of-state plates show up the next morning. They knock doors, pressure you to sign before your adjuster has even seen the roof, and disappear three jobs later with your insurance check and no warranty. Run them off. Ask any roofer for a Plano or Frisco physical address, three local references from the last 90 days, a written scope on letterhead, and proof of general liability and workers’ comp. We’re at 5601 Legacy Drive, Plano. We answer the phone. The owners’ names are on the door.

We keep a larger crew than most DFW roofers on purpose, so we can still tear off and dry in during the May storm rush when other shops are three weeks out. You can browse our recent work any time to see finished shingle roofs across DFW.
