Completed Class 4 impact-resistant shingle roof on a two-story brick home in Plano, TX, glinting after a hailstorm at golden hour

Are Class 4 Impact Shingles Worth It in Texas?

January 29, 2026 | Mahmoud Abu Saad

Short answer: yes, Class 4 impact shingles are worth it for most DFW homeowners, and the math gets stronger the closer you live to the I-35 hail corridor. On a typical 30-square Plano roof, the upgrade from a standard Class 3 architectural shingle to a Class 4 like Malarkey Vista AR or CertainTeed Landmark IR runs $1,800 to $4,200 out of pocket. The insurance discount alone (most Texas carriers shave 15% to 28% off the wind/hail portion of your premium) covers that gap in roughly 4 to 7 years. After the June 17 2024 hailstorm that hammered Frisco and Prosper, we pulled comp shingles off both roof types side by side. The Class 4 roofs almost always survived. The Class 3 roofs almost always got totaled.

what “class 4” actually means.

The shingle impact rating comes from UL 2218, a test where steel balls get dropped from increasing heights onto a shingle sample. Class 1 survives a 1.25 inch ball from 12 feet. Class 4, the top rating, survives a 2 inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. That 2 inch ball roughly mimics the kinetic energy of a 1.75 inch to 2 inch hailstone, which is exactly the size we see in the worst DFW storms.

A few things to know before you assume “Class 4” means bulletproof:

  • The test measures cracking on the back side of the shingle, not cosmetic dents on the front. Class 4 shingles can still show bruising after a major hit, but the mat stays intact and the roof stays watertight.
  • There are two ways manufacturers hit Class 4: modified asphalt (SBS polymer mixed into the asphalt, like Malarkey and IKO Nordic) or reinforced backing (a scrim or fiberglass layer, like CertainTeed Landmark IR). Both pass UL 2218. Both qualify for the insurance discount in Texas.
  • The Texas Department of Insurance requires carriers to offer a Class 4 discount, but the discount amount varies by company. State Farm, Allstate, USAA, and Farmers all publish their numbers. Some smaller carriers offer 8%. A few offer 35%.

the real DFW upgrade cost.

Here’s what we’re charging in 2026 for the upgrade portion only (the delta between a Class 3 architectural shingle install and a Class 4 install on the same roof). These numbers assume a clean tearoff, new synthetic underlayment, new pipe boots, and a standard ridge vent.

roof size (squares)Class 3 architecturalClass 4 impactupgrade delta
20 squares (small ranch)$9,500 to $12,500$11,200 to $15,000$1,700 to $2,500
30 squares (typical Plano/Frisco)$14,500 to $19,000$16,800 to $22,200$2,300 to $3,200
40 squares (Prosper/Highland Park)$19,500 to $26,000$22,800 to $30,200$3,300 to $4,200
50+ squares (luxury, complex roof)$26,000+$30,500+$4,500+

The upgrade isn’t just the shingle. Class 4 installs require 6 nails per shingle (not 4) to keep the wind warranty intact, which adds labor. Some products also need a specific underlayment or starter strip to qualify for the full manufacturer warranty. We spell all of this out on the proposal so you can see exactly where the extra money goes.

the insurance discount math, carrier by carrier.

This is the part most roofers wave their hands at. Here are the actual 2026 Class 4 discount percentages we’ve verified with Texas carriers in the last 90 days, based on policies our customers in Plano, Frisco, and Dallas have shown us:

carrierwind/hail discounttypical annual savings (30-sq roof)
State Farm22% to 28%$340 to $520
Allstate15% to 25%$260 to $480
USAA23% to 30%$380 to $560
Farmers17% to 22%$280 to $420
Liberty Mutual20% to 25%$320 to $470
Texas Farm Bureau10% to 15%$180 to $290
Progressive12% to 18%$210 to $340

A few things that surprise homeowners:

  1. The discount applies to the wind/hail portion of your premium only, not the whole policy. On a $4,200/year HO-3 in Frisco, the wind/hail portion is usually $1,800 to $2,400 of that.
  2. You have to send the carrier a manufacturer certificate after install. We send these for every Class 4 job we do. About 40% of homeowners we talk to didn’t know the certificate existed, and a few were paying for Class 4 shingles without getting the discount applied.
  3. The discount doesn’t stack with a separate roof age discount in most cases. New roof + Class 4 = one discount, not two.

payback math: when does the upgrade pay for itself?

Let’s do it on a real Plano roof we replaced in October 2025: 32 squares, two-story, moderately complex (4 valleys, 1 chimney, 12 pipe boots).

  • Class 3 architectural total: $17,800
  • Class 4 Malarkey Vista AR total: $20,400
  • Upgrade delta: $2,600
  • Homeowner’s State Farm wind/hail premium before: $2,180/year
  • Class 4 discount: 25%
  • Annual savings: $545/year
  • Simple payback: 4.77 years

That’s payback ignoring any hail event. Factor in even one storm avoiding a deductible (most DFW hail deductibles run 1% to 2% of dwelling coverage, so $4,000 to $9,000 for the typical Plano home) and the math gets aggressive fast. We’ve had three customers in west Plano who avoided the full deductible because their Class 4 roofs didn’t get totaled in storms that nailed their neighbors.

when class 4 doesn’t make sense.

I’ll talk you out of it on these jobs:

  • You’re planning to sell within 18 to 24 months. Payback period is too long. You’ll recoup some at sale through a “new roof, Class 4” line on the listing, but not all of it.
  • You live in a low-hail micro-pocket. Far north Frisco near the Grayson County line and parts of southern Dallas County see meaningfully less hail than the I-35 corridor through Plano, Carrollton, and Lewisville. Still worth considering, but the math is closer.
  • Your insurance carrier offers under 10% discount. Some smaller mutual carriers cap the discount low. Run the payback math first.
  • You’re on a 12+/12 pitch with complex architecture. Class 4 install labor on steep, cut-up roofs jumps faster than on a simple gable. Sometimes the upgrade delta hits $5,500 to $7,000, which stretches payback past 10 years.

For most everyone else in our Dallas service area, the answer is yes.

the brands we actually install (and why).

We’ve installed all of these. Here’s the honest take on each:

  • Malarkey Vista AR. Our default Class 4 recommendation. Heavily SBS-modified, meaning the asphalt is rubberized and actually flexes when hail hits. Excellent cold-weather performance, which matters in the February ice storms we keep getting. NEX polymer-modified asphalt. Limited lifetime warranty.
  • CertainTeed Landmark IR. What we install when the homeowner wants the CertainTeed SureStart Plus warranty (50-year non-prorated on labor and material when installed by a ShingleMaster). We’re top 3% nationally, so this is a real upgrade. Reinforced fiberglass mat, not SBS-modified.
  • GAF Timberline AS II. Solid Class 4 product. Lower price point than Malarkey or CertainTeed. We install it when budget is tight and the homeowner wants Class 4 without the warranty premium.
  • IKO Nordic. SBS-modified, comparable to Malarkey on impact performance. Smaller market share in DFW so resale recognition is lower.
  • Atlas StormMaster Shake. Good Class 4. Distinctive look. We install it when the homeowner wants something that doesn’t look like every other Plano roof.

We don’t push one brand. We match the brand to the budget, the warranty needs, and what the roof actually needs to do.

what we saw after june 17 2024.

The June 17 2024 hailstorm hit a corridor from west Frisco through north Plano into Allen with hail measured at 1.75 to 2.5 inches. We worked 47 hail damage roof repair and full roof replacement jobs in that batch. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Class 3 architectural roofs (any brand), 8+ years old: 38 of 41 totaled by carrier. 93% claim approval rate.
  • Class 3 architectural roofs, under 5 years old: 4 of 6 totaled. The two that weren’t totaled had partial scope (one slope replaced).
  • Class 4 impact roofs (any brand), any age: 0 of 11 inspected got totaled. 4 got partial scopes for cosmetic dent repair on metal accessories. The shingles themselves passed inspection.

That’s not a marketing pitch. That’s a sample of one storm. But we’ve seen the same pattern after the May 28 2023 storm (Carrollton, Coppell) and the April 9 2024 event (Plano, Richardson). Class 4 shingles do not get totaled in normal DFW hail. They get totaled in tornado-adjacent events, and that’s a different conversation. If you’re wondering whether your current roof took that kind of hit, start with our guide to telling if hail damaged your roof.

the warranty fine print most roofers skip.

A Class 4 shingle warranty does not cover hail damage. Read that again. The manufacturer warranty covers manufacturing defects, granule loss outside normal aging, and wind to the rated MPH. Hail is always an insurance claim, never a manufacturer claim.

What the Class 4 designation actually buys you on warranty:

  1. The shingle survives the hit in the first place. No mat fracture means no leak, no insurance claim, no deductible.
  2. The manufacturer won’t void your wind warranty because the product is rated to handle higher mechanical stress.
  3. Some manufacturers offer an enhanced “StormFighter” or “WeatherStopper” warranty tier when you install Class 4 plus the matching underlayment, starter, ridge, and ice and water. Those tiers add 10 to 25 years of coverage on labor (not just material).

We document every roof with photos, the manufacturer certificate, and the install specs so if anything does fail, the warranty claim is clean. That documentation also matters at resale.

frequently asked questions.

do class 4 shingles ever get hail damage?

Yes, but it’s rare in normal DFW hail (1 to 1.75 inch). In our 2024 storm data we tracked 11 Class 4 roofs through a 1.75 to 2.5 inch event and zero got totaled. Above 2.5 inch hail, all bets are off. A Class 4 roof in a 4 inch hailstorm (the kind that breaks car windshields) will still get totaled.

will my insurance company require class 4 if my old roof gets totaled?

No. Texas carriers cannot force you to upgrade to Class 4 on a like-kind-and-quality claim. But if you’re already paying for the tearoff and labor, the upgrade delta is much smaller than buying Class 4 outright. We always quote both options on insurance jobs so you can see the math.

how do I prove to my insurance company that I installed class 4?

Three documents: the manufacturer certificate (we provide this), a copy of the install contract showing the SKU, and photos of the shingle wrapper with the UL 2218 Class 4 stamp visible. Send those to your agent within 60 days of install for the discount to apply to your next billing cycle.

are class 4 shingles louder in rain or hail?

No. SBS-modified Class 4 (Malarkey, IKO Nordic) is actually quieter than standard architectural because the rubberized asphalt absorbs impact sound. Reinforced Class 4 (CertainTeed Landmark IR) sounds about the same as a standard Class 3.

does the class 4 discount apply if I’m in fort worth or arlington?

Yes. The Texas Department of Insurance rule covers the entire state. Tarrant County carriers offer the same discount tiers as Collin and Dallas County carriers in our experience, sometimes slightly higher because of the wind exposure.

what if my HOA restricts shingle color or brand?

Most Class 4 shingles come in the same color families as standard architectural. We’ve installed Class 4 in 18+ Plano, Frisco, and Highland Park HOAs without color issues. We’ll pull the HOA shingle list before we order if you flag it.
